The Academy of European Law

The Academy of European Law (ERA; acronym for Europäische Rechtsakademie) promotes the awareness, understanding and good practice of EU law by providing legal professionals with training and a forum for debate.

Judicial training is a priority for ERA. The Academy of European Law has established close links to the judicial training organisations in the member states and in the candidate countries. ERA was involved in the creation of the European Judicial Training Network and a founding member. In March 2001, the first EJTN General Assembly in Stockholm appointed ERA to the Secretariat of the Network.

Profile

Founded in 1992 on the initiative of the European Parliament, ERA is a public foundation whose patrons include the 25 EU member states, Scotland and the German Länder. It is based in Trier, Germany and supported by the European Union. A permanent representation is bases in Brussels, Belgium.

Through conferences, seminars, study visits, language courses and other training projects ERA enables legal practitioners to gain a wider and deeper knowledge of the diverse aspects of European law. Attendees include judges, lawyers in private practice, business and public administration, academics and others who encounter legal issues in their work.

Through its events and publications, notably the quarterly legal review ERA Forum, ERA serves as an interface between the European legal profession and the decision-making centres of Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg.

Team

The ERA team of 74 people from 15 nationalities includes a dozen lawyers specialising in four different areas of EU law who are responsible for designing and implementing the programmes: European Public law, European Business law, European Private law and European Criminal law. Speakers at ERA events are drawn from a Europe-wide network of experts, leading professionals and lawmakers. Beyond the events provided as part of its open programme, ERA organises courses and seminars on request on a range of aspects of European law and provides also in-house training.

Facilities

ERA events take place at the ERA Congress Centre (ECC) in Trier, in Brussels and all over Europe. In the headquarter in Trier, the Academy has a specialised library that includes publications on all areas of Community law from both the European and national perspectives. Since 1999 it has served as a European Documentation Centre with an up-to-date archive of most official EU publications in English, French and German.
